Defined risk vs. undefined risk

A single long call or long put has a capped max loss (the premium you paid) but a single short call has a theoretically unlimited max loss, since a stock has no upper price ceiling. Spreads like the Bull Put Spread, Bull Call Spread, and Iron Condor cap both sides by combining a short option with a long option at a further-out strike — that's the entire reason defined-risk spreads exist.

  • Long Call / Long Put: max loss capped at the premium paid, one side of the trade uncapped or very large
  • Short Call: max profit capped at the premium received, max loss theoretically unlimited
  • Short Put: max profit capped at the premium received, max loss large but capped (stock can't go below $0)
  • Spreads and Iron Condors: both max profit and max loss are capped on both sides

FAQ

Options profit calculator questions, answered.

What is an options profit calculator?

An options profit calculator models the profit or loss of an options position at expiration based on the strikes, premiums, and underlying price you enter. It shows max profit, max loss, and breakeven without requiring you to build a spreadsheet or memorize formulas.

What is an options calculator?

"Options calculator" is often used interchangeably with "options profit calculator," though it can also refer to tools for implied volatility, margin requirements, or theoretical pricing (Black-Scholes). This calculator focuses specifically on profit and loss at expiration for the strategies listed above.

Which options strategy should I choose in the calculator?

If you already placed or are considering a specific trade, pick the matching strategy above. If you're not sure, start with Single Call or Single Put to model the simplest possible position, then compare it against a defined-risk spread like a Bull Put Spread.

Does this calculator use real-time option prices?

No — every calculator on this page is manual-input. Enter the strikes and premiums from your own broker's option chain to model the trade before or after you place it.

What's the difference between max profit and max loss being "limited" vs "unlimited"?

A limited (capped) max profit or max loss means the position has a mathematical ceiling or floor — for example, a long call's max loss is exactly the premium paid, no more. "Unlimited" means there is no ceiling — a short call's loss grows without bound as the stock price rises, which is why many brokers restrict or require extra margin for that position.

Can I calculate a strategy that isn't listed here?

The six strategies above cover the most commonly searched options positions. If you need a strategy not listed — such as a straddle, strangle, or calendar spread — check back as OptionTrail expands strategy coverage, or use the closest matching defined-risk spread as an approximation.
